NEARBY TOWNS 

Matlock is only 6 miles away – once famed for its hydros and spa treatments, Matlock is now a bustling town surrounded by the spectacular countryside of the Derbyshire Dales. 
 
Ashbourne is a lovely old market town with good shopping, especially for antiques and only a 20 minute drive from the cottage. 
 
Bakewell is 13 miles away and is the only market town within the Peak District National Park boundary. It has attractive courtyards, independent shops, cafés and a fantastic location on the River Wye. 
 
Buxton is 20 miles away and one of most popular tourist destinations in the Peak District famed for its natural spring water and Georgian architecture. The town was founded by the Romans who called it Aquae Arnemetiae. 

GREAT DAYS OUT 

Chatsworth House is only a 20 minute drive from Hog Cottage and offers visitors a treasure trove of modern and historic artefacts over three floors. 
 
The Heights of Abraham has caverns and a Hill top park with wonderful woodland walks. The famous Cable Car rises from the valley floor and the observation cars transport you in comfort and safety allowing stunning views of the Derwent Valley and surrounding Peak District. 
 
Haddon Hall is 25 minutes away – set in the heart of the beautiful Peak District National Park, parts of the house date from the 12th Century, sitting like a jewel in its Elizabethan terraced gardens, and overlooking the River Wye. 
 
Pavilion Gardens is a wonderful historic venue situated in the heart of Buxton. Nestled within 23 acres of beautiful gardens, it’s a popular family friendly destination. 
 
Poole’s Cavern in Buxton is a great day out – explore the vast limestone caverns and see how crystal stalactites have lined the chambers over millions of years. Stroll through beautiful woodland trails to a panoramic Peak District hilltop viewpoint. 
 
Little Monkey’s is an indoor play centre in Matlock perfect for those wet days, open all year round. 
 
Matlock Bath Aquarium & Exhibitions offers native, tropical and marine fish housed in the former Matlock Bath Hydro. Exhibits include a petrifying well, a hologram gallery, gemstone and fossil collections, the original Victorian stone staircase and the spring-fed, thermal pool.

Hope and Anchor in Wirksworth. Their food is REAL PUB food. As much of our menu as possible is locally sourced and they love to support local suppliers and meat is from Figgshaws of Cromford, all meat products are sourced from Derbyshire farms. 
 
The Rising Sun in Middleton. They offer a wide selection of Real Ale, lagers, wines, and other drinks. For the hungry and cook a variety of "Home cooked and hearty" meals, as well as bar food, perfect for a meal out or a quick snac. 
 
The Black Swan in Idridgehay.Traditional Homemade Pub Grub which can be enjoyed in both our cosy bar area or gorgeous restaurant.

The nearest supermarket is Sainsbury’s which is located only 4 miles away in Matlock. You can order your grocery shopping and get it delivered to the cottage for when you arrive. 

SPORTING ACTIVITIES 

Carsington Water has everything you need for a great day out. Here you’ll find many sporting activities including Sailing, Windsurfing and Canoeing. You can also hire bikes and cycle the ten mile route of the reservoir. Only a 10 minute drive from the cottage. 
 
Ashboune Golf Club has won acclaim among members and has proved to be a challenge for both high and low handicaps and you can play whilst enjoying the spectacular views into Dovedale and the Peak District. 
 
Matlock Golf Course offers a challenging 18-hole par 70 course of just over 5,800 yards (yellow tees) with spectacular views across the Derwent Valley and unrivalled practice facilities, including a 10 bay covered and floodlit driving range. 
 
Balloon Rides – The beautiful Peak District awaits you on a Virgin Balloon Flights hot air balloon ride from the pretty small town of Bakewell.
